Washington State Driving Without a License
Driving without a license in Washington State can be classified in one of two ways—as a traffic violation or a criminal offense. If you have recently been charged with operating a vehicle without a driver’s license, you should speak with an experienced traffic attorney to learn more about the charges you are facing.
You may be charged with a traffic infraction for driving without a license if you show the police officer an expired driver’s license or ID card during the traffic stop and your license is not suspended or revoked. For a driving without a license traffic infraction charge, you may be sentenced to a $250 fine. If you go to court or mail in proof that you obtained a valid Washington State license after receiving the citation, the court may reduce the fine to $50.
Drivers with a suspended or revoked license, or who do not possess a valid driver’s license or proof of identification may be charged with a misdemeanor offense. Depending on the circumstances of your case, you could face expensive fines, community service, vehicle impoundment, and possibly jail time. In addition, the misdemeanor offense will show up on both your driving and criminal records.
If you are charged with driving without a license, your insurance rates may be raised substantially. Commercial drivers as well as those with bus, chauffeur or taxi licenses may also have their careers negatively impacted by a driving without a license charge. Speaking with an experienced traffic attorney is in your best interest if you wish to avoid the negative impacts of a traffic or misdemeanor violation.
After receiving a traffic ticket, do not automatically pay the fine—this is considered admission of guilt. Instead, you should speak to an attorney immediately about contesting the ticket and scheduling a court date, because there is a deadline for responding or paying. Your attorney can look at the facts of your case in order to prepare a solid defense that can be used in court.
