Washington State No-Passing Zone
Passing another vehicle on a curve can be extremely dangerous, as you do not have the visibility to know if another vehicle is coming towards you. To prevent serious accidents from occurring, Washington State has made certain area of the roadway “no passing zones,” which are indicated by traffic control devices or signs. If you do pass another vehicle in a no passing zone, you could receive a ticket. Fortunately, you can fight this ticket and may be able to have your case dismissed. An experienced traffic attorney can help you contest your Washington State no passing zone ticket.
A no passing zone is typically at a vertical or horizontal curve where there is limited sight distance. The Washington State Department of Transportation and local authorities may determine the portions of the roadway where passing and overtaking or driving to the left side of the roadway could be hazardous and can indicate this by erecting signs or markings on the road that indicate the beginning and end of the no passing zone. When there are signs in place that are clearly visible, a driver should obey them and refrain from passing vehicles.
The penalty for a no passing zone ticket is a fine. You may think that a no passing zone ticket is minor; however, it may end up costing you an increase in insurance premiums. By fighting your traffic ticket, you may be able to win your case or have it dismissed, which keeps you from facing higher insurance costs. Be sure to note the time by which you must pay or respond to the ticket or citation. There are consequences for not timely responding by paying, or by requesting a hearing to contest or mitigate the violation.
